Book Review: Pocket Guide for Huszar’s Basic Dysrhythmias and Acute Coronary Syndromes: Interpretation and Management (2011)

Pocket Guide for Huszar’s Basic Dysrhythmias and Acute Coronary Syndromes: Interpretation and Management (2011) by Keith Wesley MD is a very good entry level electrocardiography book for medical students. (I previously recommended this book in Step 3 of Electrocardiography: A Curriculum for Self-Guided Learners.)

The 200-page handbook contains good examples of most of the important EKG rhythms and patterns and provides clear guidance for their clinical management. Examples of EKG findings that are covered include the S1Q3T3 pattern of pulmonary embolism, Brugada Syndrome and various bundle branch and fascicular blocks. More basic abnormalities such as the common tachy- and bradydysrhythmia and STEMI patterns are covered as well.  However, unlike 12-Lead EKG Confidence: A Step-by-Step Guide, this book does not show full 12-lead EKGs, but rather, extracts from them. The upside is that appropriate emphasis is placed on important findings and space use is optimized. The downside of this is that one doesn’t get to see what the patterns actually look like in “real life.”

Overall, the book is an excellent choice for medical students and junior doctors who are interested in improving their cardiac resuscitation and electrocardiography reading skills.
