Essentials in Hematology and Clinical Pathology (2016) is one of the finest hematology books in the market today, and, strangely, you can buy it new for under $30 (US).
Hematology is a specialty that straddles both clinical medicine and pathology, and this book is an absolute winner on two separate levels: (1) the clinical discussions are sharp and to the point, and (2) the layout and and images are exceptionally good.
The book is a full-on clinical text that contains everything you need to know for your exams and for the clinic. Take B12 deficiency as an example. There is a lot to know: biochemistry, pathophysiology, epidemiology, clinical and laboratory features, along with histopathology and treatment. The book lays all of it out in a clear, concise and organized way.
The book also contains stylized renditions of all the important histopathological slides. I don’t know about you but when I was in medical school, I’d be looking at a book and it would say, “This is a pro-normo-myelo-erythrobalst” (or whatever) and I’d wonder, *What, how do I know it’s that?* Well, this book solves this problem by pairing each histopathological H&E stain with a highly stylized artistic renditions of the pertinent findings. That way, you can look back and the H&E stain and accurately identify all the important features and commit them to memory.
The book isn’t very large ( ~ 550 pages), but it’s very information rich, and has a very high clinical pearl to page ratio. It’s definitely the right book to keep around for when you need to review a topic quickly in preparation for examinations or rounds.
I recommend this book very highly to medical students, clinical trainees, and practicing clinicians alike.
